Governor Signs AB 2296: California Researcher Protection Act
September 29, 2008
Last night Governor Schwarzenegger signed AB 2296 (Mullin), UC-sponsored legislation that will enhance law enforcement's ability to protect academic researchers and their families from acts of violence and intimidation perpetrated by anti-animal research extremists.
AB 2296 was prompted by a string of serious attacks by animal rights terror organizations against UC researchers. AB 2296 will provide important new tools to law enforcement agencies that will aid in the investigation and prosecution of these terrorist acts. There have been multiple fire bombings and significant property damage at the homes of UCLA researchers, but charges have not been filed in connection with these acts.
"This issue is of paramount concern to the more than 27,000 faculty and staff employed at UCLA," said Chancellor Gene Block in a letter to the Governor urging him to sign the bill.
